When We Meet God (8 April 2015)

This week has absolutely been a joyful one! I am learning so much and learning the process in which the Lord truly changes us. It's a lot simpler than I have thought my whole life, but I am so grateful for His hand that I am actively seeing in my life.

Last Wednesday - One thing I've notice is it's so hard to stay strong here... especially for those we teach. You feel opposition in every situation here. You feel like a warrior for the Lord. It's a war. Temptation comes everywhere. This place here too is full of evil, as is everywhere but I think it appears here a little more than some other places.

We went into a store last Wednesday (I wanted to get what they call "Bronx pants"...haha. [I’ll attach a picture of what "Bronx pants" look like]) and some woman said excuse me to this man as she walked by and the guy got all mad, and complained to his girlfriend, and the girlfriend said she was going to go take care of her in a very demeaning manner.  So they go over and start yelling, and the woman and the other woman start fighting and then the crazy woman grabs a hanger and starts thrusting it into the other woman's eye and into her face and they were going at it knocking down all the clothes. Then the guy started beating the lady too. Everyone was running and screaming and then it was just me and my companion watching, sitting there. Haha. The girl’s face was bleeding all over and she had scars from the hanger. All because this lady said "excuse me."

A lot of these people here are full of evil or plain crazy. Sometimes when we talk of the word "evil" it may seem a little funny or it seems non-existent, but when you’re in situations like this, that is the time you truly feel the darkness feeling in the world. A lot of the people who are lost are filled with it. You see it in their eyes, in their countenance. Sometimes I really feel alone and the only hope I have is grasping onto the Lord. I sometimes feel a little bit how Moroni felt...being the only person left who wanted to follow God with some part of the Lord’s spirit, while everyone else was evil doing evil deeds amongst murderers and secret combinations. I have days like this where I see some of this kind of stuff happen, and I feel a sense of lost hope for some of these people. It's a very dark feeling and I know with all my heart the life I want now. I want none of this. It's hard because being surrounded by all this...you begin to lose hope for society. I was standing outside watching all these crazy people running around Wednesday and thought to myself, "I wonder what God thinks about all of his children here that are so lost"..."I wonder how sad and angry He must feel because of the deep love he has for them and the vision He has of their divine potential."

Anyways it put a damper on the day, but it's truly in those moments you come to understand opposition, or the true depth of right and wrong, good and evil. It's during those moments you truly feel how miserable you can be, which allows you to see how beautiful and eternally happy and loving you feel when you embrace God's spirit and His way of truth and light.

Thursday - Thursday at the church, we think someone else got shot again. There were tons of cops and there was a helicopter looking over the area. It was an intense scene. But we are all good :)

Everyone seems to progressing well that we are teaching.

I am learning so much from this experience. I'm trying to read the Book of Mormon once a cycle which means 13 pages a day. I've seen a huge difference in my life since I've been doing this. I feel more positive, I've been learning a lot about life, and I've felt the Spirit more in my life. Reading that book and applying its teachings really does have a power in it that surpasses all words.

We have been tracting a lot...most parts of the day...which I'm starting to really like. It's fun because my companion and I just start talking and we have a great time doing it. It doesn't feel like we are tracting and we get to grow closer and next thing you know, it's time to go to the next appointment. We've been able to find some awesome people for the English Sisters.

Frankie - So Frankie I talked a little about before. He is a Dominican guy who is 32 who has 4 kids under 12 years old. He is such a great guy. We found him by doing a previous investigator look up. So apparently there were missionaries who came by before us and tracted into them. They never came back so we decided to go look them up. Well two weeks ago we were able to teach him about what we do as missionaries and how the message we share can improve your life. Then, this week we shared the restoration. Frankie is truly an example to me with his faith. He is a very fit guy and used to lift weights a lot. He showed us pictures of him back in the day and he was gigantic. He's always taken good care of his body, but this Wednesday he went into the doctors. Turns out he has brain cancer. He told us that he is now going to go into the hospital to take chemotherapy for 30 minutes to an hour each day. He was telling us all about what he found out and after he finished talking, I replied to him, "Wow, that's a very hard situation you are in." He quickly replied and said, "No, I am ok with it. I'm not scared at all. God takes things that we can't handle, and he handles them for us when we truly put our faith in him." He then started saying the following, "You know, I'm 32 and if I live until I'm 33 then I will thank God with my whole heart that he's allowed me to live that old...If I live until 33, then that's great! If I live to 40, then that will of course be better but I'm not scared because I'm going to go back into God's will. He knows when He is supposed to take me, and I know He loves me more than anyone or anything here, so I don't fear. I'm not afraid. I just want my kids to know the same if the time comes that I leave this earth on time in God’s eyes, but pre-mature in man's". What an example of faith! Who more at any moment needs the knowledge of The Plan Of Salvation at that very moment?

We are on a time limit because we are not sure how much longer he has to live. There is a deep impression on my soul to be able to show him God’s plan before he may go and meet God again. He has true faith and I admire his perspective. He knows God. He knows He loves him. He trusts him. He is a great example to me and I'm truly learning that we will one day all fall back into God's hands whether we lived lives doing bad things or lives going about doing God. How is it that you want to meet God?

I love you all. Search for God. He's there just waiting for you to find him. I promise.

Flesh Eating, Dog Stabbing, and Cat Killer (1 April 2015)

There is no such thing as a dull week here! How is everyone doing?

This week pretty much all starts with Sunday.

- Church. So I had to play the organ and piano last Sunday and only had a few days to learn the hymns! All I can say is God helped me on that one! It went well. I had the opportunity again this week to play and it was just wonderful. Especially when they sang out "yo sé qué vive mi salvador" (I know my savior lives). It was great!

- Armando, Jacksiana and Tatí - So we went over to an investigator’s house that we haven't been able to see for about a month. He's the one from Mexico who met with the missionaries in Louisiana. He has two daughters. One 14 and the other 15. Without any notice, they will up and leave their house for 2-3 weeks without telling anyone. They skip school and they won't answer their phones when their dad calls them. Whatever they are doing outside, it can't be good because the area is not the best area. We even call it outer darkness haha.  So we finally got to meet the 14-year-old Jacksiana and she is awesome! She has true interest in the gospel and said she wants to change her life. She was super into the lesson and kept asking us questions and even told us she would make sure that her dad and they would go to church this week.

A member also had me come into her class and had me play guitar and that was awesome as well.

So first of all a member asked us to come and accompany her and her daughter at their house because they were inviting a guy over who had a lot of questions about the gospel. So we go over, and he looks exactly like Elvis if he would have lived longer. He doesn't speak Spanish and that's all she spoke. We were the translators for a date! It was so awkward! She basically told us to tell him he couldn't come over anymore because she can't be there alone with him. It was so awkward and we thought he was over there to learn more about the gospel, but clearly he wasn't. He was overly nice and for the wrong reasons. Funny thing is, we saw him driving our bus this week after it all happened! It was a very funny experience.

Jacksiana - So as we were having a lesson with her and her family, we kept hearing a man in the background. Finally at the end he came out, and Jacksiana told us that he was her baby daddy and that she was pregnant. He's quite a bit older than her and the situation was odd and pretty sad to see. I feel bad for her and the baby. So her baby daddy's name is Felix. So we asked her to say the prayer and it was a bit awkward. She kept praying for the "baby inside her" and it was rather odd. It was weird hearing a 14-year-old talk about being pregnant and becoming a mom. But the bright side is who more needs the gospel at a time like this?

It was a bit depressing to be honest. I felt the weight of her trials on my own shoulders. We met with them again this week, and Felix (Jacksiana's boyfriend) was there too. We were able to teach them more and we all gave them a baptism date to work for! Armando (the dad) Felix, Jacksiana, and Tatí. Even though this family is a little wild, I love them! They are just great!

Dominican family - so we are still teaching the Dominican family. Pedro (the father) works as a chef in a restaurant in the middle of Central Park. Yesterday we went over to their house for food and a lesson. We thought he was just going into cook us some average food, but we show up and he is making a feast amount of food! It was the best food I've yet to have on my mission. He's been a chef for 25 years and wow does he know how to cook! It was hard to stay awake during that lesson because I was stuffed and it felt like right after thanksgiving dinner! It was amazing! We had a lesson with them about living prophets and invited them to come to general conference this upcoming week (the time we get to listen to our living prophet speak to us).

Tracting - we have been tracting a lot lately and we had a very amazing, funny, and scary experience. Elder Lyons and I went on a split and we went tracting. We were just about to finish up tracting but we decided to go try another building. As we walked in I felt inspired to go to the 4th floor. We walked up the stairs to the 4th floor and knocked the first door. As we knocked, a lady opened the door very angrily and we began to talk to her. As we told her who we were, she started talking about how her neighbor is a witch and how anytime anyone talks to her, they come out and listen. It was rather odd, but we talked about the hope our Savior brings and we ended up giving her something to go look up. We ended the conversation, and the door closed, and as we were leaving the door, we got a call. I answered it and it happened to be a lady we just tracted into in another building. She told us that when we came up and knocked her door, she told us no, but she saw the card we left on her door (the only card we left on any door the entire time we were tracting) and she said she actually was interested and wanted to know more. That was the first miracle because that almost never happens and God knew we needed to leave that card on her door. So amongst all of this, the lady we just tracted into on the 4th floor was listening to us. We heard her saying "they are whispering they are whispering" and she kept repeating it louder and louder and finally she swung the door right open. She started talking about how she was going to kill her neighbors and how they are ruining her life, and she started to get a little out of hand. As we were talking to her, the super came up and told us for our safety, we needed to remove ourselves from that door. The lady started calling the super a witch and said to not listen to the super, but we did, and as we were walking downstairs, it turns out the lady on the fourth floor "stabs her dog, and has killed her cat," and she also told us that missionaries from another church came by a long time ago and were talking to her, and she "attacked them and bit a chunk of flesh out of one of their necks." We were super confused at this point and we're thankful that the super came and got us. We starting talking to the super for about 20 minutes, and as we were talking, it turns out the super was very interested in the message of happiness that we brought. We now have a return appointment with the super and we are going to go back to start teaching the super.

We would have never found the super if we had not gone to floor 4 because the super lives in the basement, and the super would have never known we were in the building unless the cops got called (the neighbors of the crazy lady called the cops on us), and we could have never been led to the super if it weren't for that whole experience. God does work in mysterious ways and as I type this I'm still shocked from this experience. All I can say is that God leads us to who is ready to receive the gospel of Jesus Christ if we put in the work no matter how He gets us there. We have been tracting a lot recently and it's really been paying off. I find it fun because you absolutely never know what you are going to get.

I loved the lesson the sister taught when I had to come in and play the guitar.  She related it to how we can be the Lord's servants if we let Him "tune us" and tweak us and if we give ourselves to him, we can do amazing things. We simply have to give ourselves to him. Obey what he asked us to do and we are promised to prosper temporally and spiritually in this life and the next! Sometimes I don't understand why people don't want to follow Him. Out of anyone or anything, he cares about us most, and knows and has provided a way that will make us happier than we are capable of imagining. Ask yourselves this week what you may need to do to give yourself to Him. He gave himself for us to be happy, now all we have to do is give a little of ourselves.

I love you all so very much. My love is growing out here on my mission. I love this experience. I'm coming to realize how real my Savior is. I love Him so much and I am so thankful for his hands that carry me day to day.

That same love I share with you,

- Elder Celaya

Just got back from the statue. It was a pretty cool experience. Here are some pics.

“El Brrrow” (18 March 2015)

El Brrrow (that's how every Hispanic says "The Bronx"). Ha or for "Kingsbridge" it's "Gibriree". It's especially that way for the Dominicans. Ahh I love the Dominicans :)

Weather - It's been heating up here a lot but now it's cold again. Almost all the snow is gone now which is a huge plus! It's super nasty in the city as I've said before.

Some crazy things happened here this week, but I'll get to that toward the end. Best for last :)

Hymns - So the bishop this week asked me to play the hymns on the organ now on Sundays so now I'm in the process of learning the hymns. Wish me luck. I need it :)

President of Peru. So apparently the president of Peru's last name is Celaya, so the members call me "presidente". It's quite funny. Haha.

Whenever we ask people to come to church, a lot of them say "si Dios quiere," which means "if God wants it." Haha it's like, yes, God definitely wants it!

A lot of people here have a "baby mama" or a "baby daddy," which means they have someone who had their child without being a girlfriend or boyfriend or without being in marriage. So this guy came to church on Sunday and we started talking to him. He is 18 and he asked if we could give him a blessing because his ex-girlfriend was pregnant, and he wanted to have us give him a blessing so that the son could be his.....ahhhhh. I completely face palmed on that one. Haha. Ahh.  We referred him to the bishop for that one.

So this week I was able to go on a split with our district leader Elder Burr. He goes home in July and out of anyone I've heard so far that's learned the language on the mission, he speaks Spanish the best! He is awesome. So we had nothing planned that day, so we decided to do some street contacting in the streets first.

- Foot Stamps Line. So we found out that contacting people who are in the line (for some reason they had a line for the people who were buying food with food stamps) --waiting to get food is a great place to contact. They can't go anywhere so it was great! Very interesting experience. We just went down the line and started talking to people. We had some good conversations and set up a return appointment with one guy.

- God Is Aware. Elder Burr and I had an hour in between an appointment so we decided to go tracting. (As I was typing this, I just realized "tracting" is not a word so I'm not sure if everyone knows what that is haha....it’s when you go door to door seeing if people are ready to hear about the gospel). The buildings where we were around at the time weren't that big so we decided we would keep walking until we found a large building to tract. We were walking and we walked for about 20 minutes until Elder Burr and I both just stopped and looked at this random building. We both felt like we should go and try it. So we walked up and the door was unlocked! That is SUPER uncommon here. So we walk in this project building and we go to the top floor. We started with saying a prayer asking God to guide us to those who were ready to receive the lift of pressure upon their hearts that the gospel brings. We knocked half the floor and then we knocked the next door. This lady answers the door (mid-thirties), and she acted like she had never seen us before. As we talked to her more and more, she finally threw in that she was "already baptized in [our] church." Elder Burr and I just looked at each other in surprise because we didn't know what to do. I mean that's not that common here haha. So turns out the last time she went to church was back in 95 when she was in the Dominican Republic, so she was not on our church records at all. She said we could come back and talk to her again and her little boy. It felt awesome to make that connection again and you can tell she was happy we knocked on her door. So that was the first miracle. God knew she was there and prompted us to go there for a reason.

Screaming - Immediately after that, we started to hear someone screaming at the top of her lungs. We heard things being thrown around and we heard loud bangs and crashes. It was all in Spanish and then randomly she would cuss in English at the top of her lungs. It brought a very dark feeling, but that's how a lot of these apartments are. They are filled with broken families and most of them never planned to be a family in the first place. It was acting on their quick fleeting emotions that got them here. It's super sad to see.

Anyways, Elder Burr and I both looked at each other and we asked if we should go down and knock that floor and specifically that door. We decided to go do it. As we were finishing up on the floor above it (we couldn't tell which floor the screaming was coming from), the screaming stopped. But, we decided to continue and we wanted to find where the screaming was coming from. The challenge felt inviting and so we went down and started knocking.

BAM - So we went down the stairs and started knocking. A guy opened the door and we started talking to him. All of a sudden half way through our conversation, the door behinds us flies open and you just see this lady throw a huge flat screen TV at a guy out the door, and then she starts throwing all his stuff outside the door, along with the TV. I looked to Elder Burr and was like "Yup I guess we found it!" We ended up getting right in the middle of it and it just wasn't good. The guy completely got kicked out of his home.

Miracles - so we hurried up and finished the guy at the door and went quickly to the next floor. As we were talking to this guy, we heard in the background "Hey Los Elderes!". After we finished talking, this family came up to us and were like "Hey elders how are you? Our mom is a member and she hasn't been to church for 7 years since she moved here but she would love a visit. We also took the lessons from the missionaries back in Mexico and we would love to have you guys over again and teach us!" Me and Elder Burr were stunned because that doesn't happen every day. It was an amazing experience that completely testified to me that God is extremely aware of everything. He led us there and because of that, we were able to find those people just from knocking 2 floors and 2 doors. God is good :)

Shootings - So this week there were four shootings in our area. On Friday we had a meeting with all the missionaries at 4-5 at the church. After that we went to work for the rest of the night, and we had to meet back at the church that night because that was the day I was with Elder Burr. So we came back around 8:30 and turns out someone got shot at the church. God is good for keeping his missionaries away from the church during that time :)

All the busses were backed up and there was caution tape everywhere and we couldn't get into the church at all.

It was weird because when we got the call that there was a shooting, it didn't feel weird. Before the mission that would have scared me to death! But sadly you get numb to it. Something that helps too and something I've seen daily here is that the Lord protects us - you can feel it. I've grown a testimony of that and I can truly feel it. We have one church for our whole zone, and there are usually always missionaries at the church, teaching someone throughout the day. It's a miracle that none of them "happened" to be at the church at the time.

So last Wednesday as we came home from the city, we were eating dinner at our apartment. We decided to open all the windows to our apartment because it was hot and stuffy so we did. Now we live on the second floor facing the street so we can see and hear everything that goes on in the street. All of a sudden we see these two Caucasian men with guns on their side (undercover cops). We then saw ten cop cars block the street off so nobody could escape. Out comes a bunch of cops and next thing you know, they pull out their guns and they are running after a man in between his house right across the street as we were peacefully eating dinner. Right as they all pulled out their guns, we ducked below the window and then we just hear "DON'T MOVE," with a lot of curse words mixed in there and then they tackle the guy and throw him against the car and cuff him, and all the cops flood over and surround him. They put him in the car, and then they all just drove off. It was a crazy experience. Being a cop here would be a tuff job. It was just funny because it happened right outside our window and we're peacefully eating our food. Clearly there is tons of work to do here for us :)

I want to end with a thought:

I feel as if so many of us (myself included) live only for the now, for quick satisfactions that do not lead to continual peace. One thing I've noticed is whenever that quick satisfaction is over, misery always follows. Whenever we give into that quick sin, misery is always the byproduct. Then we are stuck going back to that thing that satisfied us for that short time. Slowly we come to rely on that for our wellbeing. It gets to a point where you feel stuck as if something else has power over your potential. Many people say "I don't want to suffer now so I can be eternally happy...I just want to live how I want to live." But if you think about it, eternity is now. It's a part of now. When God talks about how we can be eternally happy if we follow His commandments, he isn't just talking about the next life, he's literally talking about now too. God gives us life - eternal life. He's given us a way to follow, to work for, and he has given us an example of something to strive to become, but we must first look to God and live.

Alma 37:47 -- “And now, my son, see that ye take care of these sacred things, yea, see that ye look to God and live. Go unto this people and declare the word, and be sober. My son, farewell.”

I love you all so dearly,

Greetings and salutations :) (11 March 2015)

Photo from 2 weeks ago

- Winter is ending. Every day here it has been very cold. The snow is absolutely nasty in the city. It turns to black mush and slush. Finally it's warming up here! That alone makes missionary work a lot more enjoyable. The only bad thing about it warming up is that here there are only two seasons - winter and summer. So that means pretty soon it is going to get very hot and humid, so I'm enjoying this "transition" time.

- Little miracles. Little miracles happen every day and you can truly see God’s hand in the work. Last Wednesday our appointments fell through, so we had a member who was having a birthday so we wrote a card to her and silvered the card with her favorite cookies. We were praying all night to be able to find someone new who needed to hear the gospel at that moment. Well as we knocked on this member’s house door, a completely random guy opened the door. We started talking to him and come to find out that he is renting a room in that member’s house and that day is his only day off. We talked to him for a while and we asked if we could come back and he said yes. Anyways, last night we were teaching a man named Uziel who is in the church but works on Sundays down in Harlem. We wanted to set a time to go teach the other man this week (Victor) and turns out Uziel works with him in Harlem. We talked to Uziel for a while and got a lot of information about him that will help us.

After that appointment, we needed to pick up laundry detergent so we walked into the store and guess who was right in front of us in line? Victor! So we were able to talk with him and potentially set something up for tonight. There are many things like that that happen that truly remind me that God is here and he will place us where we need to go if we just follow the Spirit.

- Exercise. I've been running 4 miles every morning. That is going good but wow is it tiring. On Wednesdays (today for example), we go to the church and play basketball with our district and zone leaders at 5:40. It's so much easier to cope when you feel alive physically.

- I went on a split with an elder in my district, Elder Cordon, and we were in a bus, and this huge guy comes up to us and asks us "do you know who died two hundred years ago today?" And we said, "no who?" He said "Malcom X." Then he gave us a bad look and walked to the front of the bus. Then it looked like he was getting angry and came back and asked us, "Do you know what is significant about this month?" Then Elder Cordon said "Valentine's Day haha" and that got him more angry and I said no. Then he was like "BLACK HISTORY MONTH. That's why I ain't Neva gunna join y'all Mormons.” He got really angry and walked away and cursed us out and I didn't really hear what he said so I said “thank you sir." But, Elder Cordon told me after what he said. It was honestly funny. Elder Cordon is rather new, so he kind of freaked out a bit but I thought it was hilarious. These kinds of things happen all the time and I just like seeing what they are going to do next.

- Faith. It is EXTREMELY powerful. When we let God take the wheel, we can do things that are humanly impossible. It allows us not to be scared, it allows us to be great. Just imagine if you were the shrimp in high school who walked around the hall getting beat up all the time. You would sit there and think to yourself, oh how can I get bigger so I won't get beat up all the time? It would take a long time to get bigger and your progression would stop at some point because you are human and only one person. Now let's say you instead make friends with all the big guys at school and you walk into the cafeteria together, you aren't going to be afraid at all because you have something much, much bigger there than yourself protecting you (all your big friends). It's the same with God.

When we know we are nothing, that is when we can rely on God to do everything we can't, but only as we apply the almost "impossible" faith. We can only do so much as humans, but what we can't do, God promises we can do it with his help. I think we cheat ourselves sometimes. Here is a scripture that describes it (Mormon 9:21):

“Behold, I say unto you that whoso believeth in Christ, doubting nothing, whatsoever he shall ask the Father in the name of Christ it shall be granted him; and this promise is unto all, even unto the ends of the earth.”

With God’s help we can literally accomplish ANYTHING! We just need to believe and doubt nothing! God, self belief, and hustle are the only things we need to make it happen. Apply greater faith and set higher goals than you are not capable of obtaining, because with God's help, we can do anything. I love you all.

- Elder Celaya

P.S. I don't have any photos this week because we are getting new iPads tomorrow so we had to clean off all our photos. We are going to flight club, checking out the Atlantic records building, going to Times Square, going to the Central Park zoo and then going to a restaurant in Central Park that one of our investigators works at, so I will take a lot of pictures today! Preparation day here is great! Haha. Have a magnificent week.

Take Him To The Trash! (18 February 2015)

What a crazy week here! The weeks are really starting to fly by. So, transfers got moved to Friday this week instead of today, but we already found out who is leaving the area and who our new companions will be. I am staying here, and my companion is staying here too. I have no words. I definitely did not expect that one to happen, but we are going to try and make the best of it!

Diners - So this week we had the opportunity to go out and eat at some diners. The little diners here are SO good! If you are ever in NY, go to a diner, you will not regret it!

Food - I'm starting to get tired of the food here. Well, I guess not really the food, but the amount of grease they put on their food. Last night we had these mini tostadas and after eating three, the entire plate was covered in this orange fried oil/fat. It was liquid but after waiting 10 minutes, it got hard, and was like a jello. Just imagine what that is doing in my body! And I have to eat it every day. Ahhh. It makes you feel so sick after. Haha.

Brandon - Brandon is doing great as always! So, we had to switch him to the English ward here, so he needs to go to church in that ward for three weeks before he gets baptized.  We are helping him get acquainted with that ward and we are slowly going to turn him over to the English Elders. We have taught him everything, so we might go over everything again over these next three weeks before he gets baptized.

Dominican Family - There is this dominican family that we are teaching that are awesome! The missionaries have been teaching them for quite a while, but they didn't go over to their house for a few months for some reason. I love how God works sometimes. We had our whole day planned out last Thursday, but our last appointment of the night canceled on us. We had the idea to just go check if this family still lived in that apartment. So, we went over to their apartment, knocked on their door, they let us in, and we were able to get to know them better, share some dominican words and then they asked us to come over every Tuesday night to start teaching them again! God has been so good to us with little miracles like this!

Funny story - So every Tuesday and Friday we go to this Senior Center and work in the kitchen and serve everyone food. Well, there is this one table with this really sassy lady who always has something to say to us. So yesterday Elder Lyons was clearing the finished plates off that table and he went up to that lady and asked her if he could take her trash (pointing to her cup), and she was like "NO, this ain't trash!" I heard her say this and I jokingly said to Elder Lyons "come on you know better than that! What are you thinking?" and the lady was like "Yeah, he's right, this isn't trash, but you know what? You're trash!!" Haha it was very funny. As we were walking out, Elder Lyons had to go to the bathroom so they didn't see him walk out.  As I was walking out they asked me where he was, and I told her I threw him out in the dumpster in the back and they started clapping and cheering. Haha. It was so odd and random but it gave me a good laugh for the day.

Dog Poop - The sidewalks here are always COVERED in dog poo. You have to look down the entire time you walk so you don't step in any. Kind of gross, but this place is so dirty I don't think anyone really cares here.

Fights - It's crazy how many fights we hear from our apartment. Someone is always yelling outside or in the apartment building. They are drunk and screaming and fighting in the middle of the night. It's sad. Sometimes I feel these people have lost all respect for themselves or others.

Last week we had the opportunity to go to Roosevelt Island (the small little island between Manhattan and Brooklyn and Queens). We took a tram over the water. I will attach some pictures. It was awesome.

We also went to Nike Town which is the 5 story Nike store in Manhattan. It was super awesome. Each floor is separated by sport.

I want to end with something I have learned this week - something I have decided to try to put in practice in my life. We should only care what God thinks about in this life. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of us, it only matters what the boss thinks. If you are good with Him, it doesn't matter what else happens really. It's sad because there are missionaries who feel you have to be miserable to do the work of the Lord. They feel that if you are having a good time doing the work, then you aren't doing the work. We should be the happiest people alive because we are filled with the knowledge that all will be well in the end! What greater news is that to make someone happy? Be happy. If you aren't truly happy, make some changes so you can be the happiest person you can possibly be. With God, your happiness will expand more than you ever could have imagined.

Just. Be. Happy. Easier said than done, but you get the point =)

With much love,

Elder Austin Celaya
